The Saints Rugby program started as an Intersession class and earned varsity sport status the next year. The program offers students the opportunity to compete at the highest level of high school rugby in Southern California. Traditionally, four to five of the teams in the league are ranked in the top 20 nationally for high school rugby. Varsity athletes can earn a letter and PE credits toward graduation.

The Saints Rugby team had its best season in 2017-2018. The team had a 9-2 overall record and won the league championship. The team earned trhe #1 seed in San Diego and advanced to playoffs. The Saints defeated Mira Costa in the semi-finals to get to the Southern California Championship. The Saints played well and created good chances, but eventually lost to Bosco in the final.

Individually, the Saints Rugby team has seen players advance to play collegiate rugby at some of the top programs in the nation. In the last couple years, Brennan Amsberry has gone on to play at the Naval Academy, James Downey attended Army, Matt Macey attended St Mary’s College and Ethan McVeigh earned a spot on the U20 USA National team and is playing rugby in Wales. The program hopes Saintsmen see collegiate rugby as a possibility to enrichen their college experience.

The Saints rugby program has a team of coaches who are committed to providing a quality rugby experience for the Saintsmen. The club conducts an off season work-out routine which includes strength training and conditioning. In season, the Saints rugby team works out in the gym twice a week and practices three times a week. Games typically take place on Saturday. The Saints Rugby program has high expectations for all of our student athletes. All rugby players are expected to model the school values of TRUTH, LOVE, and COMMUNITY. Playing rugby at Saints is an opportunity to live and experience these values. If you are interested in Saints Rugby or would like more information, please contact Eric Dent at edent@sahs.org
