The original San Clemente Youth Rugby (San Clemente “Gators”), was founded in 2004 by Karl Terrey, an Australian ex-pat. Karl grew up in Australia playing rugby, and it was Karl’s vision to grow rugby in San Clemente and Southern California. The San Clemente program has become one of the most highly esteemed and respected youth rugby organizations in Southern California. Since 2004 rugby has become the fastest growing sport in the U.S. The Triton Rugby Club, a San Clemente High School ASB Club, was founded by a group of volunteers in June 2015. The high school club is affiliated with the San Clemente Triton Rugby Club. The initial waves of players who’ve been playing rugby for The Gators since they were 6 or 7 years old have now hit high school age. Hence the timing was perfect to start a high school club in 2015. The club was a huge success in it’s inaugural year.
